General Life
As An Astrophycisist
As an astrophysicist and a mother, I have made it my goal to find ways to inspire young people to pursue careers in science and engineering. Working in physics and astronomy is a great way to engage youngsters in science. Children and adults are always amazed by the vastness of the cosmos and the mysteries it hides. They listen with interest when told about discovering new planets, stars exploding, and black holes that do not let anything escape their strong and voracious pull.
As A Mother
My two boys have always been the center of my life, so I share my love for science and technology with them. When young, they were fascinated by my work, and they learned about many astronomy topics that fascinated me the most, like how stars are born, evolve, and die. They attended many of my public talks, sometimes helping me with STEM events. They also enjoyed visiting my workplace at that early age, even if that meant quietly sitting while I was behind the computer or attending a meeting. They always smiled when we walked through the STScI's lobby and saw the Hubble Telescope model hanging up in the foyer.
With them, I also learned that kids require care, love, patience, understanding, and guidance. I also learned that parents require strength, intelligence, and a solid commitment to their children. Because being a parent can be difficult, especially when dealing with the challenges of active and creative children who don't fit society's mold, especially when facing those challenges alone.
When they started pursuing their dreams in their early teenage years, I felt grateful to be able to expose them to the world of astronomy and share my passion for the sciences and technology. Instilling in them the importance of hard work and never giving up.
Now, as young adults, they are exploring the world in their own way, much different from what I thought they would. But with that, they teach me to see the world differently from what I see in my world and to respect and celebrate their decisions.
I am so blessed to have my two boys and grateful they have solid principles and values. And because I am still a mom, I will continue helping them navigate the complexities of life, even if sometimes they roll their eyes and turn around -- I know they are listening.
